I’ve always hesitated to call myself a [swimsuit] model or even allow others to be privy to that facet of me. And it wasn’t because I thought I sucked at it or was embarrassed. Nah, I feared being judged by it. A significant portion of my life has seen me battling misperceptions due to my looks. Being hated before I open my mouth. Being shrugged off because it isn’t possible to be more than a pretty face. Every accomplishment being attributed to my looks or, for the really hateful, having slept my way into it. Or the absolute worst: being told I’m smart…for a pretty girl.
I’m not complaining, just stating facts. The disbelief has made me a stronger person. It takes a certain amount of fortitude to endure being perceived as stupid/unevolved or bitchy before you even open your mouth. One is judged from the time you leave your house until you return in the evening. People cannot help it. The insecure need to belittle the confident. How could they look themselves in the mirror otherwise?
Still, dealing with such judgments everyday is tiring so though I have been modeling for the majority of my 20s, I was reserved about discussing it. I didn’t want to give people another reason to judge me. But you know? One gets judged regardless. Why let it stop your celebration? Their judgment is a reflection on them, not me. It’s impossible to prevent someone from misperceiving you, and it’s weakening to shrink yourself for another.
Anyway, it’s Friday (though my body is swearing it’s Monday), not trying to self-analyze. I hope you guys had a great week because I did. I ventured down South (lower than the Gulf) and did some work that I’m going to share with youse.

LOVE this. In fact, I live by it. The looks basis is of course different me being CONSIDERABLY darker than you. But the reactions are somewhat similar in certain arenas.

Yo…honestly, I’ve embraced the truth that you stated in this for years. You can’t control what people say, do, or how people perceive you; only how you react to it. Me? I can count on my fingers the number of people who’s opinions really matter to me. Outside of that select few, one can say whatever they feel (outside of my earshot). Mother made ‘em, mother had ‘em, mother f_ck ‘em (Buy a vowel). Sorry if I offended anyone w/the language. Great post!
